French Bulldog
Bat ears, a boxer's build in a lap-dog body, and the most in-demand mug in America. The Frenchie is proof that charisma is a body type.
Face of the Breed
When Brachys launches, French Bulldog owners post photos and the community votes one dog the Face of the Breed every week. The first champion will be immortalized here, on this page, permanently.

Temperament
Affectionate, alert, and effortlessly funny. Frenchies are companion dogs to their core: they want to be with their people, they make friends easily, and they rarely bark without a reason. They can be stubborn, but they are far more interested in charming you than defying you. In recent years the French Bulldog has ranked as the most popular dog breed in the United States by AKC registrations — the squishy face took over the country.
Living with a French Bulldog
Tailor-made for apartments and city life. A Frenchie needs short walks, indoor play, and air conditioning in summer — heat is their most serious everyday hazard. Most cannot swim; never leave a Frenchie unsupervised near water.
Health
French Bulldogs are a significantly brachycephalic breed. BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) is common and ranges from noisy breathing to genuine airway obstruction — some dogs benefit from corrective surgery. Heat stroke risk is high. Frenchies are also prone to spinal issues (IVDD and hemivertebrae), skin allergies, and ear infections. Most Frenchie litters are delivered by C-section — a fact worth knowing about the breed's anatomy. Buy or adopt from health-tested lines and keep your Frenchie lean.
Care and grooming
Weekly brushing, regular ear checks, and facial-fold cleaning. Keep exercise short and in the cool hours. Ramps or steps for furniture protect their backs — discourage big jumps.
Frequently asked questions
How long do French Bulldogs live?
Most French Bulldogs live 10 to 12 years. Weight control, heat caution, and attention to breathing health are the biggest factors owners can influence.
Why are French Bulldogs so popular?
They combine a big-dog personality with a small, apartment-friendly body, minimal grooming, and a face built for the camera. By AKC registration counts the Frenchie has ranked as the most popular breed in the United States in recent years.
Do French Bulldogs have health problems?
The breed is prone to BOAS (airway obstruction), heat intolerance, spinal conditions like IVDD, and skin allergies. None of this is inevitable in an individual dog, but every Frenchie owner should know the signs of breathing distress and overheating.
Can French Bulldogs swim?
Most cannot — their heavy front and short muzzle make swimming dangerous. Use a dog life vest near any water and never leave a Frenchie unattended by a pool.
Are French Bulldogs good apartment dogs?
Among the best. They are quiet, compact, low-exercise, and content wherever their people are. Their main requirement is climate control — a hot apartment is genuinely unsafe for a Frenchie.
