Pug
Two thousand years of being adored, from Chinese emperors to your couch. The Pug is the ancient master of the art this whole site exists to celebrate: the face.
Face of the Breed
When Brachys launches, Pug owners post photos and the community votes one dog the Face of the Breed every week. The first champion will be immortalized here, on this page, permanently.

Temperament
Charming, mischievous, and endlessly people-focused. Pugs were bred for exactly one job — companionship — and two millennia of practice shows. They are good with children, welcoming to strangers, and prone to following their person from room to room. The breed motto, multum in parvo, is accurate: this is a big personality in a small, sturdy frame.
Living with a Pug
Pugs thrive anywhere their people are. They are true house dogs: heat-sensitive, happiest indoors, and perfectly suited to apartments. Left alone too long they will tell you about it. Their appetite is legendary — the easiest Pug health mistake is overfeeding.
Health
Pugs are strongly brachycephalic, with the breathing and heat-sensitivity cautions that implies. Their large, prominent eyes are vulnerable to ulcers and injury. Obesity is the most common and most preventable Pug problem, and it worsens everything else. Skin-fold infections, luxating patellas, and (rarely) a serious neurological condition called Pug Dog Encephalitis also occur in the breed. A lean, cool, well-checked Pug is routinely one of the longer-lived flat-faced dogs.
Care and grooming
Weekly brushing — Pugs shed more than their short coat suggests. Clean the deep nose-roll wrinkle regularly. Measure food, resist the begging face (this is the hard part), and keep walks short in warm weather.
Frequently asked questions
How long do Pugs live?
Pugs typically live 13 to 15 years — among the longest lifespans of the flat-faced breeds. Weight control is the single biggest thing an owner can do to help.
Do Pugs shed a lot?
Yes — famously more than people expect. Their short double coat sheds year-round. Weekly brushing (more during seasonal blowouts) keeps it under control.
Are Pugs good for first-time owners?
Very. They are affectionate, sturdy, eager to be with you, and forgiving of beginner mistakes. Their main requirements are company, portion control, and respect for their heat limits.
Do Pugs have breathing problems?
Pugs are strongly brachycephalic, so snoring and snorting are common, and heat or overexertion can become dangerous quickly. Know the signs of overheating and keep summer walks short and early.
What does multum in parvo mean?
It is Latin for 'much in little' — the Pug's traditional motto, describing a whole lot of dog packed into a small body. It has followed the breed for centuries.
